Garageband

G.I.M.P. (Graphic Image Manipulation Program)

Open source image editing tool similar to Photoshop.  This application uses X11, a windowing system that allows you to run applications ported from other UNIX systems.  It provides access to many open source applications otherwise not available for OS X.  http://gimp.org/

 

Google Earth

Google Earth puts a planet's worth of imagery and other geographic information right on your desktop. This was donated to the MLTI Project from our friends at Google.

One note: Google Earth can be very bandwidth intensive and a potential burden on your network. Coordinating classrooms for Google Earth use might aid network performance. http://earth.google.com.

A Text/Audio/Video "Chat" client.

 

iCal

The built-in calendar program that supports multiple calendars.

iDVD

DVD authoring software. You can use iDVD even if you don't have a DVD player.  Create a DVD project using iDVD, and even create a DVD disk image. Then you can take the resulting file to a workstation with a DVD burner or use a portable DVD burner to create the DVD. The DVD will then play back on most consumer DVD players.

NeoOffice

Open source productivity suite, and a Microsoft Office alternative. Create, open, edit, and save Microsoft office formatted files (.doc, .xls, .ppt).

Note that if you are trying to save a document to a network server you will not get the regular OSX file saving dialog. In the NeoOffice dialog, go to the root level of your hard drive to view Volumes, which contains all of your mounted server sharepoints. You could also save the file to your home folder and drag it to your sharepoint.

NetLogo is a programmable modeling environment for simulating natural and social phenomena. PASCO DataStudio

Data analysis, graphing calculator. http://www.pasco.com/datastudio/. It is intended to be used with PASCO Scientific Probes, but the application will work even without the probes plugged in.

It should be noted however - That in order for the probes to be recognized when you plug them in, you may need to launch the "PAS Portal" application located inside the PASCO Datastudio folder. This is the "probe recognition" software.

 

PASCO MyWorld GIS

A Geographic Information System for Inquiry-Based Learning. Query, plot and analyze geographic data such as climate, geology, biodiversity, population and more. http://www.pasco.com/myworld/

LiveDictionary with AudioAssisted Text

LiveDictionary is a Safari extension that adds fast, convenient dictionary lookups to the web. http://www.eloquentsw.com/livedictionary.html. AudioAssistedText is a LiveDictionary plugin that allows you to point to a word in Safari and hear the word spoken in a human voice. http://www.audioassistedtext.com/. Both titles offered to MLTI by the authors, Eloquent Software and MetaTheory.
